If someone witnesses a terror attack, UK counter-terrorism guidance (from National Counter Terrorism Security Office – NaCTSO and Action Counters Terrorism – ACT) sets out very clear steps:
-
RUN – If there’s a safe route, leave the area immediately.
-
Encourage others to come with you, but do not delay if they refuse.
-
Leave belongings behind.
-
-
HIDE – If escape isn’t possible:
-
Find cover from gunfire or blast (brick walls, reinforced doors, large objects).
-
Stay away from windows.
-
Lock or barricade yourself in if possible.
-
Remain silent and turn phones to silent (including vibrate).
-
-
TELL – Once safe, contact police by dialling 999.
-
Give clear details: location, description of attackers, weapons seen, direction of travel, any casualties.
